The Ethiopian Clean Cooking Alliance (ECCA) is a multi-stakeholder platform dedicated to accelerating the adoption of modern and sustainable cooking technologies across Ethiopia. Registered as a national alliance, it brings together government institutions, private sector companies, and civil society to address the critical health and environmental challenges caused by traditional cooking practices. The mission of ECCA is to protect the environment, improve public health, and empower communities by building sustainable markets and ensuring universal access to clean, affordable, and culturally appropriate cooking solutions.

Overview

The Ethiopian Clean Cooking Alliance (ECCA) is a multi-stakeholder platform dedicated to accelerating the adoption of modern cooking technologies across Ethiopia. To scale their impact and reach over 150,000 households, ECCA required a digital platform to unite government institutions, private sectors, and civil society.

Discovery

The project began with a discovery phase by identifying challenges of traditional cooking practices in Ethiopia, such as health risks and deforestation. Through stakeholder interviews, we analyzed technology gaps to ensure the alliance’s digital strategy was sustainable, locally appropriate, and mission-aligned.

Key Insights:

  • Multi-Stakeholder Engagement: The site needed to serve diverse groups, from government policy-makers to local youth entrepreneurs.

  • Resource Centralization: Creating a hub for policy documents, research initiatives, and biogas potential mapping.

  • Impact Visualization: Highlighting key metrics like the 75% reduction in smoke and the 200+ partner organizations.

UX Strategy

Our strategy focused on creating an informative yet action-oriented environment.

Key Steps:

  • Membership Tiers: We designed a clear structure for Community, Standard, and Premium membership plans to encourage conversion.

  • Geographic Focus: Integrated sections for project locations to show the Alliance’s reach across 50+ locations.

  • Accessibility: Ensuring that clean cooking resources and news are easily searchable for researchers and donors.

Build & Implementation

  • Sustainable Branding: Used a clean, nature-inspired design to reflect environmental protection and green hydrogen initiatives.

  • Interactive News & Events: Integrated a dynamic news section to highlight events like the “Decarbonizing Africa’s Cooking System” side event.

  • Lead Generation: Implemented a detailed contact and partnership form to streamline communication between ECCA and potential global donors.

Results

The ECCA platform now serves as the primary digital authority for clean cooking in Ethiopia.
